A Journey to the Threshold Space
In our story, the main character is dissatisfied with their world and attempts to enter a new, seemingly better world. They enter a portal and soon find that the new world is apocalyptic, and they quickly want to leave. Mazes and liminal spaces prevent them from leaving easily. Eventually they figure out a way to exit the portal. Upon returning to the original world, the character is happy and perceives it as a beautiful place.
The deeper lesson in our story is similar to the Wizard of Oz. The character is frustrated and bored of their homeland. However, once they enter the new world, the character is terrified and desperate to return home. This is because the idea of home is a place of safety, love, and familiarity. In one sense, the lesson of The Gateway, is also to practice gratitude.
